What makes Olympic Valley different?
Olympic Valley is more than a ski town. Its Olympic legacy, multi-generational families, passionate ski culture, and unusually deep connection to the mountain create a community where people don't just visit... they return, stay, and often pass their love of the valley on to the next generation.
In many ski towns, people come and go. Olympic Valley is different.
The roots run deep here.
Since hosting the 1960 Winter Olympics, Olympic Valley has continued to produce Olympians across multiple generations. Many of them return after their competitive careers, choosing to raise their families in the same community that helped shape them. Around here, being friends, neighbors, or ski partners with past and current Olympians is simply part of local life.
The Olympic legacy is visible, but what stands out even more is the number of multi-generational families who have built their lives here. Children grow up skiing these mountains, leave for college, careers, or adventures elsewhere, and many eventually find their way back.
My own family is one of them. My parents still live in Olympic Valley, where I was raised. My husband and I raised our children here as well. We three generations deeply connected to this community through living, working, and playing in the valley.
That same pattern extends beyond full-time residents. Many second-home-owning families have been coming here for decades. Parents introduce their children to skiing, those children grow up and bring their own families, and properties are often passed from one generation to the next. In a market where inventory is already limited, this contributes to one of the defining characteristics of Olympic Valley: many homes never truly return to the market or if they do it is after several decades.
At the center of it all is the mountain.
Olympic Valley attracts an unusually high concentration of passionate skiers. Some live here year-round. Others are second homeowners who spend every possible weekend and holiday in the valley. What brings them together is a shared appreciation for the terrain at Palisades Tahoe. The mountain challenges people, inspires them, and creates lifelong connections.
It's no coincidence that Olympians continue to emerge from this community. The same terrain that develops world-class athletes also creates a culture that encourages people to stay engaged with skiing for a lifetime.
Perhaps that's what makes Olympic Valley different from other ski towns. It's not just a place people visit. It's a place people become connected to. And once that connection is formed, many find it surprisingly difficult to leave.
