September Might Be Tahoe’s Most Underrated Month
Why is September such a great time to be in Tahoe?
September is what we call “locals’ summer.” The days are still warm, most of our favorite summer activities are still available, but the crowds have thinned. The lake is quieter, the trails are less traveled, and Tahoe seems to slow down after a busy summer.
July and August are what I think of as the power weeks of summer in Tahoe. There is always something to do, somewhere to go, and someone to see.
There is free music playing somewhere multiple nights of the week, festivals and sporting events fill the weekends, and the lake, trails, restaurants, and bike paths are all buzzing. Of course, many of those summer visitors are our own family and friends, so we're right there with them... getting out on the lake, going for hikes and bike rides, listening to music, and enjoying everything that makes summer here so much fun.
But we're also working! Summer is a busy season for those of us who live and work in Tahoe. Add in visiting friends and family and a seemingly endless calendar of events, and by the end of August, I think most locals are ready for things to slow down just a little.
Then Labor Day passes and it almost feels like Tahoe lets out a collective sigh.
Welcome to Locals' Summer
When I was younger, September felt like it was almost exclusively locals. That's changed over the years. We still see some mildly busy weekends in September, but weekdays can feel wonderfully quiet.
The best part is that summer isn't really over.
We can still get some epic uncrowded and warm days on the lake. The hiking and biking trails are less traveled. You can often decide at the last minute to go out for dinner without worrying about whether you'll get a table.
There is one local caveat to that last one: check the restaurant schedule before you go.
This is the time of year when some Tahoe restaurants begin closing a few days a week or trimming down their daily hours. Partly because there are fewer people in town dining out and partly, I suspect, because everyone needs a little time to recover after the power weeks of summer.
The Best of Both Seasons
September has a different energy. The mornings are cooler, the days a little shorter, and the first hints of fall begin to appear. Somewhere in the background, winter starts creeping into the conversation. But there's no need to rush it.
For now, we get to enjoy locals' summer, kind of like a reward for making it through the power weeks.
